Western Cape College’s 2022 age champions with their trophies at Friday afternoon’s presentation.

A SPATE of COVID and flu cases in the school community had an impact on numbers at the Western Cape College athletics carnival last week, but it didn’t dampen the spirit of students and staff.

Evans House claimed the overall victory at Andoom Oval, beating Duyfken, Flinders and Mapoon.

Flinders took out the House Spirit Award.

Age champions were celebrated on Friday afternoon after two days of track and field competition.

The program was mixed up with dance competitions, tug-of-war and other novelty events.

Two school records were broken. Star long-distance runner Max Lynch shaved almost four seconds off his age group’s 1500m record with a time of 5:22.40.

It was a record that stood for 20 years.

Demi de Tournouer also broke a long-standing high jump record in her age group.

She leapt 1.36 metres, smashing the 2006 mark of 1.29 metres.

Demi de Tournouer and Max Lynch set new records.
